We're pleased to announce that Phyllis Meadows, PhD, MSN, RN will be speaking on the second day of the 2016 Michigan Nursing Summit, September 29-30. Dr. Meadows will discuss Understanding Community Needs and Creating Connections.
Dr. Phyllis Meadows, PhD, MSN, RN, serves as Associate Dean for Practice at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. Dr. Meadows focuses her efforts on developing a comprehensive strategy for the School to improve the public health workforce and improve the effectiveness of local governmental health agencies and community health services. She has more than 25 years of experience designing community based health approaches focusing on outreach, health education, program design and evaluation.
As a faculty member of the Department of Health Management and Policy, Dr. Meadows develops and teaches courses in public health administration, leadership, public health policy and population health. She has spent a number of years in public workforce development, including the design and coordination of model training methods and content for health professionals and practitioners.Dr. Meadows is also a Senior Fellow with the Kresge Foundation, where she advises, develops and guides the programming efforts of the health team. She is actively involved in the implementation and evaluation of several national public health initiatives designed to build local leadership and community partnerships, to address the health inequities experienced by vulnerable populations across the country.
Dr. Meadows has spent a substantial number of years working in local governmental public health, and served as the Director of Public Health and Health Officer for the City of Detroit. In this role, she was responsible for delivering and improving the broad range of mandated public health services. Dr. Meadows continues to work closely with local health departments, and the department leadership in Michigan, across the United States and several international locations. She lends her expertise in nursing, public health and philanthropy with numerous appointments to local, state, and national Boards and Advisory Committees. These include the State of Michigan Department of Public Health Board of Directors, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Partners in Nursing Initiative, the Executive Nurse Fellows National Advisory Committee, and the Jonas Fund – Center for Nursing Excellence in New York. Dr. Meadows also serves on the Review Board for the American Journal of Nursing, and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies’ Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities, and the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement, and the Review Board for the American Journal of Nursing.
