In celebration of Nurses Week, Saginaw Valley State University nursing faculty and students join Dr. Christine W. Saltzberg (center), Director of the Michigan Center for nursing and Michigan Nursing Action Coalition for the first two screenings in Michigan of the excellent and powerfully moving documentary, The American Nurse.
Several SVSU faculty members, including Drs. Rose Lange and Sally Decker, were on hand as students provided B/P screenings to local community members, nurses and their family members who had traveled to Saginaw from as far away as Detroit and mid-Michigan to see the film. When asked what they thought about it after viewing it for the first time, one RN stated, “I’m proud to be a nurse!”
The film follows the lives of 5 nurses in various settings doing what nurses do every day--making a difference in people’s lives. This film conveys several key messages: nursing takes courage and strength, nursing requires a commitment to be present in peoples’ lives when they are most vulnerable, and nursing involves treating all people with dignity and respect. The film provides an authentic glimpse into why nursing is considered the most trusted profession.
The Michigan Nursing Action Coalition is part of the Future of NursingTM: Campaign for Action, which seeks to improve health and health care through nursing. An initiative of AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Campaign works with Action Coalitions in 50 states and the District of Columbia to implement the Institute of Medicine’s Future of Nursing recommendations.
Our vision is to ensure that everyone in America can live a healthier life, supported by a system in which nurses are essential partners in providing care and promoting health. The Campaign is coordinated by the Center to Champion Nursing in America.
A coalition involves diverse stakeholders including nurses, other clinicians, employers, educators, funders, insurers, all working to transform health care through nursing. The Michigan Nursing Action Coalition is the vital link to achieving a culture of health in MI and the nation. We invite you to join us in this important work by visiting our website Action Coalition page and volunteering for one of four action teams focused on the future of health and health care in Michigan. Together we can make a difference!
