Kupiri Ackerman-Barger, PhD, RN, to Speak on Workforce Diversity at the 2016 Michigan Nursing Summit

We're pleased to present our Friday Keynote speaker for the 2016 Michigan Nursing Summit, September 29-30: Kupiri Ackerman-Barger, PhD, RN. Dr. Ackerman-Barger will discuss diversity in the nursing workforce, Diversity: Complex Realities and Elegant Solutions.

Kupiri “Piri” Ackerman-Barger is an assistant professor at the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing. She teaches methodology in health sciences, social determinants of health, and organizational change. She also provides faculty development on nursing pedagogy, interprofessional education and education equity. Dr. Ackerman-Barger’s academic interests relate to health equity and social justice. She has a particular interest in the preparation of nurse leaders and nurse educators with the capability and desire to promote diversity in academic nursing as a mechanism for increasing nursing workforce diversity. Her research focuses on strategies for supporting student success in schools of nursing and schools of medicine. She serves as a national consultant and speaker on strategies to optimize student success for underserved and underrepresented groups in health professions.

Prior to joining the School of Nursing, Ackerman-Barger taught as an assistant professor in nursing at Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif., and as a nursing instructor at College of the Redwood in Eureka, Calif. She served on Humboldt State University’s Making Excellence Inclusive Team. Prior to teaching, Ackerman-Barger was a hospital nursing administrative supervisor and critical care charge nurse.

Ackerman-Barger earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Humboldt State University. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing Education from California State University, Sacramento, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing Education from the University of Northern Colorado.

Ackerman-Barger has been published in the Journal of Nursing Education, Journal of Theory Construction and Testing, and Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity
